Welcome to the Inspiring Girls Expeditions application portal!
Our 2021 application will open in mid-December 2020.
What are we looking for?
Inspiring Girls Expeditions combines science, art, inquiry, and wilderness travel. We seek engaged, multi-faceted, talented folks who embody the human experience; we believe the diversity of our program makes our expeditions so much stronger and insightful. We are looking for applicants who can each bring a unique contribution to the team. Because we look for applicants who will share their perspectives and learn from one another, we do not choose team members based solely on their individual applications. We choose the team as a whole, according to what each member brings to the team.
When selecting our expedition teams, we look for:
1. Diversity of backgrounds: a range of racial, ethnic, cultural, economic, gender, sexual orientation, family, and geographic identities and backgrounds.
2. Diversity of interests and life experiences: a balance of interest in science, environment, outdoors, art, philosophy, social issues, politics, and more. If you are passionate about something, tell us about it!
3. Opportunity: we recognize and support applicants who hold minoritized identities and backgrounds and those who may face more significant barriers to entering science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) and outdoor fields.
Information about Inspiring Girls Expeditions & COVID-19
We are hopeful that we will be able to run in-person expeditions in 2021, but we will not make a final decision until the spring of 2021, when we have a better idea of the pandemic’s status. We are planning as though we will run in-person expeditions, understanding that we may need to alter our plans.
Our decision to run expeditions will depend in part on our partner institutions - many of them currently have restrictions on travel, group size, and social distancing that would make our in-person expeditions difficult to run. We are also aware that our expedition format - 12 days in the wilderness with limited contact with the outside world - could pose risks to our participants and instructors. In wilderness environments, we are careful with hygiene and manage many types of risk, but the coronavirus brings us more challenges. If we are able to run in-person expeditions in 2021, we will implement strict protocols to minimize the risk of COVID-19.
If we are not able to host our in-person expeditions next summer, we are planning alternative programming similar to what we did this past summer with our Expeditions@Home program, and are considering the possibility of short duration in-person trips if circumstances allow. Submitting an application this year is the best way to be considered for all of the options we may offer, so we highly encourage you to apply!
